[Mega 8K S] Q&As From the Live Stream

Just the day before the pre-order of Phrozen's Sonic Mega 8K S, we had a live stream where we introduce and demonstrate some of the features of the new released printer. During the live session, there are some questions in the comment section that we could not answer them on live one by one, so we are now gather them here and reply to them.

If you have any further questions, please leave us a comment and we will try to answer them.

Difference between Sonic Mega 8K and Sonic Mega 8K S

Unlike the original Mega 8K, Sonic Mega 8K S is designed with providing affordable, efficient,  productivity solution for 3D printing workshop or print farm owners, who have the needs to fulfil mass production orders from their clients in mind.

This means, Sonic Mega 8K S with its budget friendly price, will not sacrifice any printing quality compared to the original Mega 8K. With the same dual linear rail & ball screw design, the new Mega 8K S has the same capability to print large and heavy objects with no wobbling.

Sonic Mega 8K S comes with not only fast-releasing ACF film pre-installed, the all new high speed system equipped enabled this printer to print in the speed of 600 layers per hours with each layers being 0.05 mm height.

Aside from that, Sonic Mega 8K S also has some changes to improve user's workflow. Such as the Drip Hanger that let you hang your build plate diagonally after printing, to drain the resin that left on the plate and gaps between models into the vat; and a Lift-Up Lid that can be easily opened up using only single hand, stays wherever you leaves it, and doesn't occupy extra space when you are working with your printer.

Table down below shows a comparison of hardware specifications between Sonic Mega 8K S and the original Sonic Mega 8K.

Is Sonic Mega 8K S a cheaper build Mega 8K?

No. As stated above, Sonic Mega 8K S is designed to be a productive machine for 3D printing workshop owners. The quality of prints it produce cannot be sacrificed in exchange for an affordable price, and so does the build quality of printer itself.

Phrozen uses metal to build the chassis of Sonic Mega 8K S, and retain all those good stuffs from the original Mega 8K, such as dual linear rail & ball screw for Z axis, perforated build plate made out of high quality steel, same high quality vat with positioning feet underneath, and the lid uses the same material as the top cover of Sonic Mini 8K S that blocks out environmental UV to prevent from unwanted resin curing. Plus, it is also pre-calibrated before it leaves the factory!

Is the build plate and vat interchangeable between Sonic Mega 8K S and Sonic Mega 8K?

No, both build pate and vat are not interchangeable. Due to the new design of T-plate (the part which holds the build plate) with the Drip Hanger, they have different size on attach mechanism. Despite both the vats having the same size and hold same amount of resin, because of the positioning feet that Sonic Mega 8K S got, they are not interchangeable either.

-

Does it has holes on the build plate?

Yes, and there is a good reason for that.

Perforated build plate effectively reduces suction forces during the lifting, and let resin travel back to its position after retraction. This design enables users to print faster with higher success rate.

Some of people don't like the empty spaces on the plate because if they have a support or so placing at where the hole exists, it might not be able to print out, and might leads to unsuccessful print. To helping you prepare your model better for printing with perforated build plate, please read this article where one of our community members provides an tool to indicates where those holes will be.

-

Is the wheel (feet) adjustable?

No, they are rubber pads to reduce vibration so that you don't get a wobble that causes layer lines on the final result, and you don't want a moveable wheel for the same reason. As long as your printer is calibrated, it will be fine if you don't have a table or shelf that is fully flat. (Just, the level of liquid resin in the vat will tilt, so you don't want your table to be that tilted also.)

-

How strong is the UV light intensity? Is it adjustable?

The light intensity of Sonic Mega 8K S is around 5500 ~ 6500 μW/cm^2, should be a little bit stronger than the original Mega 8K. You can adjust light intensity in slicing software such as Chitubox when preparing your model. You will not be able to adjust light intensity on the printer.

-

Does it has the capability to connect to LAN via cable or Wi-Fi?

No, Sonic Mega 8K S does not have ability to connect to your local area network or the Internet. You will be able to transfer your sliced models via USB drive.

-

Is the automatic resin feeder add-on compatible with other printers?

No. In order to achieve the detection of the remaining amount of resin in the vat and other functionalities, the Pump & Fill automatic resin feeder has to connect to the motherboard of  the printer, which makes it incompatible with existing printers.

Does Sonic Mega 8K be able to upgrade to reach the same printing speed as Sonic Mega 8KS does? What about other printers like Mini and Mighty?

The fast 600 layers per hour printing speed of Sonic Mega 8K S is achieved by its new designed high speed system. As a result of integration of hardware and software, with researches and development to carry out this feature, it cannot be implemented onto a previous model by only firmware update or changing out some spare parts. We currently don't have information about the upgradeability of existing printers including Sonic Mega 8K. As a innovative company which values their customers, Phrozen will keep its research in 3D printing field, and will effectuate what could improve our users' experience as much as it can.

How to Create Your Own Resin Profile

Getting your resin settings right is crucial to achieving a successful print. This is particularly important for those who are aiming for the utmost detail and precision. However, it's often the case that companies only provide resin profiles for their own products—or sometimes they don't provide them at all.      For newcomers to the scene, it can be quite frustrating to spend the majority of their time fine-tuning settings. Moreover, what works perfectly on one printer might not produce the same results on another. This discrepancy arises from the variations inherent to different devices, which shows the necessity to tailor resin settings accordingly.      With that in mind, let's delve into the experience shared by Derek Jackson from J3DTech, also a Phrozen community member. He gives us some insight into the process of refining resin settings. Here's my take on the information: To dial in a resin, there are two ...

[Mega 8K] Setting Supports on Perforated Build Plate

Sonic Mega 8K has the largest printing volume of Phrozen's Sonic 3D printer line-up by the time of writing this article. Except the size, perforated build plate that comes with Sonic Mega 8K is also an obvious different from other models in the Sonic line-up.     The reason Sonic Mega 8K comes with a perforated build plate is that, lager the scale the model is, or fuller the build plate, higher the suction force it has to deal with, also longer the time you have to wait for the resin to travel back to its place after retraction. The perforated build plate of Sonic Mega 8K can effectively helps reducing the suction force especially when printing the raft, and also letting resin traveling back to its position after retraction more quickly, preventing model from peeling off from the plate and layer lines happening.     Some people may find it inconvenient working with perforated build plate, as in the slicing software, ther...

A Simple Tip to Increase the Surface Quality of Prints

The quality of surfaces of resin 3D  prints varies as it is affected by lots of factors, one of them is the model orientation when preparing the model. Orienting the model, especially for those which has sudden increase or decrease area of cross section, can increase the quality of the model's surface, by minimize the difference between those area of cross sections. This way can also help stabilize the plate-shaped model, spreading out the forces from a single direction to the whole model, decreasing the chance of deformation. ▲ Layer line is a common thing happened on resin 3D prints. This surface annoying many people who pursuit details and perfection. /Evaty Yu     The common way is to orienting the model by 45 degree and see if the result is satisfactory. Sometimes it did work but just doesn't quite there. In this stage most people will simply do the post processing and sand the surface to eliminate those imperfections, but some people would rather adjust and ex...
