8 Advices for Beginners in 3D Printing

I was having a conversation with one of the group experts in our community, Ondrej Novotný, talking about the overall using experience of resin 3D printing, and the difficulties that people often run into.

Being an experienced 3D printing user himself, he understands that beginners may find it a bit challenging at the outset, and able to provide some advices that can help them to improve their 3D printing skill, without scurry aimlessly.

My advice to beginners is to take their time, follow best practices, and seek advice from the 3D printing community. With patience and persistence, their experience with resin 3D printing is likely to improve over time.

1. Read the Manual:

Start by thoroughly reading the user manual and documentation that comes with your resin 3D printer. Understand its specifications, capabilities, and safety guidelines.

2. Slicing Software:

Familiarize yourself with the slicing software you'll be using to prepare your 3D models for printing. Learn how to adjust settings for different prints.

▲ Slicing Software developers often provide detailed explanation for each parameters that you can adjust in their software. Carefully read these documentations can help you learn how to control your 3D printer.

3. Resin Handling:

Handle the resin with care. Understand the type of resin you're using, its requirements, and safety precautions. Wear appropriate protective gear, like gloves and safety glasses, face respirator.

4. Calibration:

Pay close attention to calibration instructions. Properly level the build platform and ensure the printer is correctly calibrated for the specific resin you're using.

5. Support Structures:

Learn how to add and configure support structures in your slicing software. Adequate supports are crucial for successful prints.

6.Ventilation:

Work in a well-ventilated area or use a dedicated ventilation system when working with resin, as some resins emit fumes.

7. Clean-up:

Have cleaning supplies like isopropyl alcohol, paper towels, and containers ready for post-processing clean up.

8. Patience:

Understand that resin 3D printing can be a trial-and-error process. Be patient with yourself and the technology. Learn from your mistakes and take your time.

3D printing is a skill that will develop overtime when one become more and more experienced on it. That means one has to actively learn from the fails and using observation to figure out how should they fix the problem and make things work. With careful calibration, proper handling, and attention to detail, many of common issues such as failed prints, layer separation, and resin spillage can be resolved.

We hope these tips will help you to begin your 3D printing journey.

How to Create Your Own Resin Profile

Getting your resin settings right is crucial to achieving a successful print. This is particularly important for those who are aiming for the utmost detail and precision. However, it's often the case that companies only provide resin profiles for their own products—or sometimes they don't provide them at all.      For newcomers to the scene, it can be quite frustrating to spend the majority of their time fine-tuning settings. Moreover, what works perfectly on one printer might not produce the same results on another. This discrepancy arises from the variations inherent to different devices, which shows the necessity to tailor resin settings accordingly.      With that in mind, let's delve into the experience shared by Derek Jackson from J3DTech, also a Phrozen community member. He gives us some insight into the process of refining resin settings. Here's my take on the information: To dial in a resin, there are two main factors

[Mega 8K] Setting Supports on Perforated Build Plate

Sonic Mega 8K has the largest printing volume of Phrozen's Sonic 3D printer line-up by the time of writing this article. Except the size, perforated build plate that comes with Sonic Mega 8K is also an obvious different from other models in the Sonic line-up.     The reason Sonic Mega 8K comes with a perforated build plate is that, lager the scale the model is, or fuller the build plate, higher the suction force it has to deal with, also longer the time you have to wait for the resin to travel back to its place after retraction. The perforated build plate of Sonic Mega 8K can effectively helps reducing the suction force especially when printing the raft, and also letting resin traveling back to its position after retraction more quickly, preventing model from peeling off from the plate and layer lines happening.     Some people may find it inconvenient working with perforated build plate, as in the slicing software, there is no indicator

The Principle Behind Fast Resin 3D Printing

TL;DR:  There are several things you should look into when try to shorten your printing time. Before you start to adjust the speed of the setting, find a stable setting as your starting point. Understand your equipment and the material you are using. Choose a resin that requires lower exposing time with low viscosity, and install a releasing film that is not sticky to the cured resin.  Fast printing is a result of the combination of right setting for right tools, experimenting with the setting to optimize it is necessary. Expect to spend time on this process.      Printing fast has becoming a trending topic in Phrozen community recently. After Phrozen released a video promoting their ACF film, with the printer applied with the ACF film ended up prints 6x faster then the other one shown in the demonstration video, people are hyped about this idea.
