A Simple Tip to Increase the Surface Quality of Prints

 The quality of surfaces of resin 3D  prints varies as it is affected by lots of factors, one of them is the model orientation when preparing the model. Orienting the model, especially for those which has sudden increase or decrease area of cross section, can increase the quality of the model's surface, by minimize the difference between those area of cross sections. This way can also help stabilize the plate-shaped model, spreading out the forces from a single direction to the whole model, decreasing the chance of deformation.

    The common way is to orienting the model by 45 degree and see if the result is satisfactory. Sometimes it did work but just doesn't quite there. In this stage most people will simply do the post processing and sand the surface to eliminate those imperfections, but some people would rather adjust and experimenting with their settings.

    Chen-Tung Chiang (homophonic translated) from the community suggested a quick way to determine the optimal angle when orienting the model. To decide how many degree to tilt, you have to know both the XY resolution of your printer in micron, and the layer height of the model that you are going to print.

    Take Sonic Mini 8K for example: When printing models with 0.05mm, with the XY resolution of the printer being 22 micron, which is 0.022mm, making those two numbers the opposite and adjacent of  a right triangle, then you can get the length of its hypotenuse by Pythagorean theorem. Now the degree to tilt will be the angle formed by the hypotenuse and the adjacent, which can be calculated using trigonometric functions, in this case is 66.25 degree.

    Update: A more simple expression of this calculation is arctan(layer height/pixel width) in degrees, thanks for the comments from our group members!

    Please note that the actual degree to tilt should depending on the model itself, and which surface has imperfections such as layer lines that you want to deal with, you might have to adjust the reference point when orienting the model.
